Avli tis Nefelis
A family-run garden cafe in Paphos with no fixed menu, no reservations and no interest in pretending otherwise. The constraints were the brief.
The client
A small family-run cafe set inside a grandmother's old garden, surrounded by flowers and trees, where homemade treats, fresh lemonade and good coffee are enjoyed slowly beneath the shade.
That sentence is on their homepage, and it is the whole business. Everything the site does either supports it or gets out of its way.
What they asked for
Somewhere to tell their story properly — the garden, the family, the sustainability ethos — alongside the practical things: what they serve, what it looks like, and how to find them. In Greek and English, because Paphos is both.
The constraints were the interesting part
Self-service. No fixed menu. Homemade daily. No reservations. Those four facts are printed on the homepage, and each one removes something a hospitality site normally has.
- No fixed menu means the menu page cannot be the site's centre of gravity the way it is for a restaurant. It has to describe a kind of thing, not a fixed list.
- No reservations means no booking engine, no availability, no forms. The call to action is to come by, and contact happens through the channels they already answer.
- Self-service means there is no host to answer questions, so the site has to pre-empt them.
- Bilingual means the story has to work twice, in two languages that carry warmth differently.
A weaker version of this site would have added a booking widget and an online menu because those are what hospitality sites have. Both would have been wrong here.
What I delivered
- A bilingual GR/EN site covering the story, the menu, the sustainability ethos, the gallery and visit information.
- A photography-led design, because the garden sells itself better than any copy about it would.
- A responsive gallery, since most people find the place on a phone.
- Smooth animation, paced slowly to match a place people sit in for an afternoon.
- Direct contact by phone, email, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok — deliberately no booking engine.
The result
Live at avlitisnefelis.com.
Constantinos delivered our website far faster than we expected, and the result speaks for itself. He captured the character of the garden and our family's story in both Greek and English, without us having to explain things twice.
“Without us having to explain things twice” is the part I would point at. For a client who has never briefed a website before, not having to repeat themselves is most of what good service means.
